چکیده

Many epidemiological studies have revealed consistent associations between ambient concentrations of inhalable (PM10) particles and their elemental composition with adverse respiratory health effects. On the other hand, suspended particulate matter emissions from several types of sources can be identified by the investigation of their particle element composition. The objectives of this work were to present the results of PM10 concentrations and trace elements obtained from 1year sampling/analysis campaign. Three different sampling sites of the region of Western Macedonia in Greece were selected to investigate the PM10-associated elements fingerprints in samples of airborne particles: S1 in the center of Kozani, where urban activities and traffic density occur, S2 in the city of Ptolemaida located close to the industrial area, and S3 in the village of Eratyra in a rural residential district. The PM10 samples were analyzed by ISP-MS instrument. Twenty five elements were detected at quantifiable concentrations in the examined PM samples. Finally, an attempt was made to identify the main PM10 sources that affect the sampling sites. For this purpose was applied the multivariate Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) receptor model.

Comparison of receptor models for source apportionment of the PM10 in Zaragoza (Spain).

Receptor models are useful to understand the chemical and physical characteristics of air pollutants by identifying their sources and by estimating contributions of each source to receptor concentrations. In this work, three receptor models based on principal component analysis with absolute principal component scores (PCA-APCS), Unmix and positive matrix factorization (PMF) were applied to stu...

AN EVALUATION OF THE UoWM MM5-SMOKE-CMAQ MODELING SYSTEM FOR WESTERN MACEDONIA

The University of Western Macedonia (UoWM) has recently set up an operational system for predicting air quality in the Florina–Ptolemais–Kozani basin in Western Macedonia, Greece. This is a mountainous basin where around 65% of the total energy production of Greece takes place in lignite power plants. The concentrations of PM10 is the main air quality concern in the region, and the high particu...

Source apportionment of size and time resolved trace elements and organic aerosols from an urban courtyard site in Switzerland

Time and size resolved data of trace elements were obtained from measurements with a rotating drum impactor (RDI) and subsequent X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Trace elements can act as indicators for the identification of sources of particulate matter <10 μm (PM10) in ambient air. Receptor modeling was performed with positive matrix factorization (PMF) for trace element data from an urban ba...

Trends and sources vs air mass origins in a major city in South-western Europe: Implications for air quality management.

This study presents a 17-years air quality database comprised of different parameters corresponding to the largest city in the south of Spain (Seville) where atmospheric pollution is frequently attributed to traffic emissions and is directly affected by Saharan dust outbreaks. We identify the PM10 contributions from both natural and anthropogenic sources in this area associated to different air...

Road Traffic and PM10, PM2.5 Emission at an Urban Area in Algeria: Identification and Statistical Analysis

Air quality in greater Algiers, in Algeria was assessed analyzing aerosol particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) at a site influenced by heavy road traffic. Particulate matters were collected using a Gent sampler to characterize the atmospheric aerosol of Algiers. An Energy dispersive X ray spectrometer (EDXRF) was used to determine the heavy metal concentrations in the PM2.5 and PM10 size fractio...
